Spectacular Shed Fire in Londonderry
Londonderry Rural Fire
Brigade were alerted to a shed fire in Wirrana Place,
Londonderry just before 1am, Friday 26 November 2004. Volunteer
firefighters en-route to the station observed a large plume of
dark smoke against the night sky indicating a major fire.
Londonderry 1 arrived on
scene at 1.03 am, along with two appliances from the NSW Fire
Brigades (NSWFB) Richmond station, to find a large iron and
timber shed measuring approximately 20m x 10m heavily involved
in fire at the rear of a property.
Information from the property
occupant, and from firefighter observations revealed 5 motor
vehicles and other items including flammable liquids and
magnesium were inside the shed.
The Incident Controller,
Londonderry Deputy Captain Peter Tutty and the NSWFB firefighter
-in-charge Gerard Duck determined that an external attack and
exposure protection was the appropriate strategy. A RFS
Breathing Apparatus (BA) crew of Deputy Captain 'Yeti', and
Senior Firefighter Jason Salt and a NSWFB crew also wearing BA
as protection against toxic fumes being given off by the fire,
used 3 lines of 38mm hose to attack the fire and protect
valuable exposures nearby.
Deputy Captain Brett Williams
(Water Supply Commander) and Firefighter Adam Caruana organised
a supply of water from a hydrant 150 metres away, supplying
water to Londonderry 1, which in turn supplied water to the two
NSWFB units.
The firefighting strategy
successfully contained and extinguished the fire, with a fire
being totally extinguished at 2.55am. The shed and it's contents
were severely damaged by fire, but crews successfully prevented
the spread of fire to a number of nearby exposures.
The cause of the fire was
determined to be accidental, due to a candle used for lighting,
causing contents of the shed to catch alight.
Co-operation between
Londonderry Rural Fire Brigade and the Richmond Fire Brigade
(NSWFB) was as always, outstanding, with the shared use of
equipment and resources.
