Rural Fire Service fire fighters are required to undergo formal fire training that is aligned to Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) National Competencies before being able to attend fires and incidents. This training is presently provided at training centres located within the Cumberland Rural Fire Zone (Kingswood and Plumpton) and also at specialist facilities at Kemps Creek and other locations. Some training, especially "hands on" is provide at brigade level. We've also done some important hazard reductions in our area of recent times, the first being "the bush block" next to the school click here for photos. and the second "The Drop Zone" on Nutt Road Click here for photos Hazard reductions are an important part of preparing for the upcoming fire season firstly they allow us to reduce the fuel loadings, removing fuel means an area will no longer support fire, but doing so can be harmful to the environment. It is more common to reduce the amount of fuel, in which case a fire would, generate less heat and be less dangerous for firefighters and the general public, travel more slowly, have a lower flame height and be less likely to develop into a crown fire, they are also less likely to produce embers that can cause spot fires. They are also a good time to introduce new members who have completed basic training to a bush fire so they can experience a bush fire with out the stress of it being an emergency. For more information on Hazard Reduction please visit the NSW RFS website Click here
RFS Qualification levels: Basic Firefighter (BF - minimum required to attend fires and incidents) Village Firefighter (VF- Exterior Structural Firefighter) Advanced Firefighter (AF) Crew Leader (CL - required for Senior officer positions) Group Leader (GL)
Specialist Qualifications: Compressed Air Breathing Apparatus (CABA) Operator (Interior Structural Firefighter) Rural Fire Driver (RFD) Chain Saw Operator (CSO) Senior First Aid (SFA) Advanced (Oxygen) Resuscitation (AOS) Rural Fire Instructor (RFI) Air Base Operator (ABO - Aviation Support) Prescribed Burn Supervisor (PBS) Members are encouraged to undertake available training courses providing they meet course prerequisites (usually completion of, and proof of competency in a lower level qualification). All course are provided free of charge to members. Being well trained and competent in the use of advanced firefighting equipment enables the members of Londonderry RFS to provide a high standard of protection to Londonderry and nearby communities.
